The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is a chance to get more comfortable underwater, try different types of diving and build on what you learned during your Open Water course.
Over two days, you’ll complete five Adventure Dives. Deep and Underwater Navigation are required, and you’ll choose the other three with your instructor based on what you’re interested in and the conditions during your course.
At Bali Dive Cove, that usually means training around Amed and Tulamben, with dives that can include the USAT Liberty, night diving, drift diving and wreck diving.
The course is made up of five Adventure Dives.

You then choose three additional Adventure Dives with your instructor.
We usually recommend Night, Drift and Wreck because they work particularly well with the diving around Amed and Tulamben, but other options are available depending on your interests, age, conditions and instructor availability.
For the Deep Adventure Dive, we usually head to the USAT Liberty wreck in Tulamben.
A PADI deep dive is a dive deeper than 18 metres, and for divers aged 15 or older the Advanced Open Water course allows training to a maximum depth of 30 metres.
During the dive, you’ll look at some of the practical effects of depth, including how colours change underwater, compare depth readings between dive computers or gauges, and practise planning and managing a deeper dive.
The PADI standards require the Deep Adventure Dive to be conducted between 18 and 30 metres.
Navigation is about learning how to work out where you are underwater rather than simply following your guide.
You’ll practise:
We usually complete this dive on our house reef or in Jemeluk Bay, depending on conditions. The PADI navigation dive includes both natural navigation and compass exercises.
The remaining three dives give you the chance to try different areas of diving.
Our night dive normally begins shortly after sunset. You’ll learn how to use a dive light effectively, communicate underwater using your light and hand signals, maintain buddy contact and navigate after dark.
The Drift Adventure Dive introduces you to diving in moving water. You’ll look at how to plan for current, make suitable entries and exits, maintain buddy contact and use the current rather than fighting against it.
The Wreck Adventure Dive is another opportunity to explore the USAT Liberty while learning how to recognise potential wreck hazards, navigate around a wreck and maintain good buoyancy around the structure.
The Adventure Dive is conducted around the outside of the wreck and does not include wreck penetration.

We use dive sites around Amed and Tulamben depending on the skills being covered and the conditions.
The Deep Adventure Dive is usually completed on the USAT Liberty wreck in Tulamben, where eligible divers can train deeper than 18 metres to a maximum of 30 metres.
The Underwater Navigation dive is usually completed on our house reef or in Jemeluk Bay.
Other Adventure Dives may also take place around Amed or Tulamben depending on the dive you choose. For example, the Wreck Adventure Dive can be completed around the USAT Liberty, while Night and Drift dives are planned around suitable local conditions.
The course price is 4,900,000 IDR per person.

You must already hold a PADI Open Water Diver certification or a qualifying equivalent certification from another recognised training agency.
The minimum age for the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is 12. Divers aged 12–14 earn the Junior Advanced Open Water Diver certification and have a maximum continuing-education depth of 21 metres. Divers aged 15 and above may train to a maximum depth of 30 metres.
There is no minimum number of logged dives required before starting the course.
You’ll also need to complete a diver medical questionnaire before starting. If you answer yes to certain questions, you may need written clearance from a doctor before diving.
We keep our training groups small so your instructor has time to work with you properly throughout the course.
You’ll train at real dive sites around Amed and Tulamben rather than treating the Adventure Dives as box-ticking exercises. We choose sites that suit the skills being covered, your experience and the conditions on the day.
Our team knows the local dive sites well, including the USAT Liberty and the reefs around Amed, so the course combines structured PADI training with useful experience in the environments you’re likely to keep diving in afterwards.
