PADI Open Water Course in Amed, Bali

What is the PADI Open Water Course in Amed, Bali?

This is where it all starts. The PADI Open Water Diver course is your first full scuba certification and the beginning of a whole new way to explore the ocean.

Over three days in Amed, you’ll learn everything you need to become a safe and confident beginner diver, from setting up your equipment and getting comfortable breathing underwater to controlling your buoyancy and planning a dive.

By the end of the course, you’ll be certified to dive to a maximum depth of 18 metres with another certified diver, anywhere in the world.

And the best part? You’ll be learning in the ocean from the very beginning, surrounded by the reefs and marine life of Amed.

What will you learn during your PADI Open Water Course in Amed, Bali?

The course is a mix of simple dive theory and hands-on training, with lots of time to practise your skills in the water.

You’ll complete three main parts:

Knowledge development
You’ll complete your PADI eLearning independently in your own time before or during the course, covering the basics of dive equipment, pressure, equalisation, buoyancy, dive planning and staying safe underwater.

Confined water training
Then it’s time to get in the water. We start in calm, shallow conditions, usually in Jemeluk Bay, where you can take your time getting used to the equipment and practising important skills such as mask clearing, regulator recovery, buoyancy skills and safety procedures.

Four open water dives
Your four open water dives are where everything starts to come together. You’ll practise your skills throughout the dives, while also getting plenty of time to explore the marine life and enjoy being underwater.

Where will you dive on your PADI Open Water Course in Amed, Bali?

One of the best things about learning to dive in Amed is that your training happens in the ocean rather than a swimming pool.

We begin our confined water sessions in Jemeluk Bay or at a nearby beach, where the calm, shallow water gives you plenty of time and space to get comfortable with the equipment and practise your skills.

Your four open water dives then take place around Amed and Tulamben, with the exact sites chosen according to conditions and your progress during the course.

Your final day is usually spent on the USAT Liberty wreck in Tulamben, where you’ll complete your final two open water dives to around 16 metres and put everything you’ve learned into practice on one of Bali’s most iconic dive sites.

The exact plan can still change depending on conditions and your progress during the course.

Why learn to dive with Bali Dive Cove?

Learning to dive is a big experience, and we don’t think it should feel like being pushed through a production line.

We normally teach our Open Water courses with a maximum of two students per instructor, giving you plenty of time to ask questions, repeat skills and progress at a pace that feels comfortable.

Because we’re based right here in Amed, our instructors know the local dive sites and conditions extremely well. That means we can choose the best places to train each day rather than sticking rigidly to a set itinerary.

Most importantly, we want you to finish the course feeling like you can actually dive, not simply feeling like you passed a course. The certification is important, but building your confidence underwater is the real goal.
